Peru

Since our last visit to Peru in April 2009 we have noticed a few changes.

First of all, rice is now the staple instead of potatoes.  Last visit, we seem to have appetizers with potatoes and then main meals with potatoes.  We still are served potatoes this visit but not as frequently as before.  We have seen miles and miles of rice fields in Northern Peru to feed the growing population.

Secondly, the children are now learning English in school.  The government has realized the importance of the tourism industry and thus the English lessons.

The population seems to be mainly people under the age of 30.  We do see some older people but they are a definite minority.  This visit to Peru we are here during the children's summer vacation (from approximately Dec. 20th to beginning of March) so we have observed many more children than last time.

I mentioned previously that there was a bus tour of French speaking people - correct this to a bus tour of elder hostel people from the US.  There were some French people in the restaurant yesterday and I incorrectly thought they were with the tour group.
