We had a superb day doing the Panama Canal partial transit tour today. There are 2 new locks being built, 1 on the Pacific side and 1 on the Atlantic side. I will add photos tomorrow (I tried today but they wouldn't go in). The transit is really interesting. This time (we did this tour 5 years ago) the ferry was really busy with tourists compared to before when there were only 15 or so people on the ferry. The day was very hot and steamy to begin with and then after lunch there was a thunder/rainstorm which was great because the temperature cooled down to 25C from the mid 30's.
The Turkey Vultures were migrating again today and John estimates we may have seen 10,000 or more today and yesterday. It was great seeing them from our viewpoint in the middle of the canal, they were coming from the east and moving westward.
Panama city is a bustling city, with many new high rise condo's that have been built since our last visit in 2008. The new Trump tower is nearing completing and is absolutely huge. They have felt the recession here though in terms of tourist numbers which were down considerably last year but last year they did receive a record high number of Canadian tourists.
