We had another great breakfast at the hotel in Moyobamba yesterday morning and then hit the road again and arrived at Abra Patricia around noon. We were the only guests once again at the lodge. After lunch, it rained so we took the afternoon off and drank tea and ate cookies in the lodge dining/meeting area.
Domingo, the chef, cooked up another great dinner for us (including cream of pumpkin soup which was delicious). We retired to bed early and were up at 6 and departed after breakfast for Jaen. We left around 7.30 from APatricia and arrived in Jaen around 1.45ish. Long day in the van, there were a few stops but mainly it was slow because of lots of construction on the road. There is a lot of travel involved in seeing Northern Peru as we see only a few species of birds in each area, then we are off and running in the van to another area. The road for the most part from APatricia to Jaen was fairly good, but there are so many switchbacks going up and down the mountain passes.
Today David and Ramiro also got the cold. Sure is a pesky germ this cold/cough/sore throat thing is. So, only Baldo the driver and Russ don't have it! Yet. David, Marie, John and I are all taking antibiotics so hopefully we will get over it sooner than later, but it seems to be lingering on in John so I am not holding my breath.
We checked in El Bosque around 2 p.m. and I elected to stay at the hotel but the others went off birding at 3.
There is no hot water here either, there wasn't any in Tarapoto, and only 1 day did we have it at Moyobamba. So far, Abra Patricia wins for best bathroom, ie. lots of hot water.
Tomorrow we bird around here and then are changing the schedule and going to Chappari Lodge for 2 nights, then to Chiclayo for 1 nite, then we are finished in Peru and on our way to Ecuador and to Buenaventura Lodge. The time is going by so quickly.
I was glad to hear from Peter that the weather warmed up at home. Thomas says he is heading home for Reading Week so that's great that he can go to his grandma Irene's 90th birthday dinner.
Not sure when I will have internet again, probably not until Chiclayo which will be now on Feb. 07.
