Wed. Jan. 26 - Abra Patricia
Today John is still feeling quite unwell. He has a bad cough so we are taking it very easy and hopefully he will start to feel better.
This morning the sun was shining here in the cloud forest, a rare event. I didn’t sleep well so did not get up at 5:15 a.m. in the dark and cool damp weather in order to have breakfast at 6 a.m., but John went for breakfast and then returned to the room to go back to sleep. David, Marie and Russ went for a hike with Ramiro. John and I went down to the dining room around 8.30 a.m. and on the way there we saw a Chestnut-crested Cotinga, which is a very good bird to see. I had breakfast and then the others returned and we sat outside under the palapa because it was so warm and sunny. I was able to get lots of butterfly pictures this morning due to the nice weather.
Lunch was wonderful as all the meals are here, we had an appetizer of avocado in a deep fried shell sort of like a quesadilla, then fried trout and mashed potatoes for main course and peaches for dessert. Just after we finished eating, the Tayra returned to the feeder for more bananas and we were able to photograph it again. I hope to get a good internet connection sometime soon so I can add a few photos into this blog.
The weather changed after our afternoon siesta and the neblina came back (the clouds). We are hanging around the dining room this afternoon but David and Marie went off birding with Ramiro and Russ is reading his book on his Kindle. David and Marie saw a Masked Trogon and Emerald Toucanets while out birdiing.
Dinner was good and we were able to do some interneting when the electricity was on and heard from Peter that Premier Ed stepped down - good!
Ramiro and Jose have been owling every night but the owl is too far away - I think something 700 meters is the closest they have been to it so there has been no point in us going along with them.
Thurs. Jan. 27 - Abra Patricia
We had a leisurely breakfast at 8 a.m. which was a luxury after so many 6 a.m. breakfasts. Then everyone except John went for a short hike to see a newly discovered orchid (discovered by Jose O’Altamirauo, who works here at Abra Patricia lodge). He showed us another orchid and I was able to photograph both of the orchids. I have promised to paint the newly discovered one and then scan the painting and send it in the email to Jose.
After seeing the orchids we climbed up the canopy tower which was easy after climbing others in the past. The tower is metal and very stable with a wonderful panorama view of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
At lunch, we had corn salad which was good, and then veal cutlets with rice and mashed lima beans - Russ and I don’t eat lima beans but we seem to be served lima beans prepared in various ways every day. For dessert we had cactus, 3 slices of red cactus and 1 of yellow cactus, with a little honey over top. Not bad. The lodge tries to serve us typical Peruvian food . We have had pineapple, apple, orange, lemonade, tree tomato, maracuya (passion fruit), mango and papaya juices so far on our trip. The Tayra made his lunchtime appearance to grab a banana out of the feeder.
After lunch we all went in the van down the hill towards Moyobamba but it rained for the first hour (warm rain) and when it stopped we got out and saw many species of birds in various flocks. Probably the highlights of the afternoon were Amazonian Umbrellabird, along with others such as Paradise Tanager, Canada Warbler, etc.
It is now after 6 p.m and the electricity should come on again soon. I type these notes using my netbook/computer when the power is off and then copy/paste into the blog. David has no hot water in his room, so he was going to use our shower tonite - let’s hope the water comes on in there because when John showered earlier he got all shampooed up and then the water went off for 5 minutes. More adventures. John is still not feeling too well which is most unfortunate. When he gets a cold he really gets a bad one and we all want him to get well and enjoy everything.
